Panagia in Thassos, a stunning traditional mountain village, is situated east of Ipsarion Mountain at an altitude of about 300 meters in the northeastern part of the island. It's only 8 kilometers away from the island's capital, Limenas. Thanks to its ideal location, the village is easily accessible and very popular among visitors. The village holds a history of at least 300 years, when the residents of the area, fearing piracy, abandoned the coasts and took refuge in the mountains. The village was initially named "Anastasio," but the name "Panagia" prevailed, thanks to the village's church, which is, of course, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Despite the difficulties, the settlement evolved rapidly. In 1858, when the fear of pirates was a thing of the past, Panagia already had 600 homes and, together with Theologos, it was one of the two largest villages in Thassos. After the revolution of 1821, Panagia became the capital of Thassos, replacing Theologos, which was a little inconvenient as a location due to its considerable distance from the sea. Trade transactions with the opposite coast of Kavala developed in the village. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of all this is that Panagia even acquired its own currency, the so-called “bakires”, which you can see in the village church, where they are preserved as relics of the village’s bright past. In the village, people would either walk or use donkeys to get around at that time. As a result, roads and cobblestone paths are so narrow for a modern car. The transportation of today made it necessary to construct a larger road around the settlement in order to preserve the traditional character of the village, but also to facilitate movements and visits. In Panagia, there are currently about 900 residents, according to the most recent demographic data. This number may seem small compared to large cities, but it is quite significant for a mountain village in Thassos. Locals enjoy a peaceful traditional life and are in close touch with nature and the history of their place. While the number of people living in the village stays about the same all year, lots more people visit in the summer to enjoy its beauty and friendly atmosphere. The architecture of the village certainly takes you back to another era. Both the terrain's morphology and the preservation of the village’s traditional style play a role in that since houses are built with "sachnisia" (a Greek traditional building technique) and traditionally built balconies. Walking along the narrow cobblestone streets, the doll-like houses with slate roofs and small wooden balconies make up a fairy-tale stroll between the past and the present. Beautiful manor houses, built in the late last century and the beginning of this current one, adorn the village while preserving folk tradition. In 1978, the village of Panagia was designated a traditional settlement, and building standards protect its traditional character up until today. The buildings of the village are certainly landmarks of Panagia Thassos. The fountains, the natural stream that crosses the village, and the green slopes of Ypsario Mountain are ideal for relaxation and hiking in nature. On such a route, you can taste the cool water from the mountain springs and rest under the shade of the towering plane tree. Green canals crisscross the village, creating a dreamlike image, while the numerous fountains offer a naturally cooling breeze. Drakotrypa is another nearby hiking route with a duration of about 15 minutes, through a magical path with pines, plane trees, and wild vegetation. It ends up in a cave with stalactites and stalagmites and has not yet been fully explored. The view to the mountains, the plain, and the fields are equally impressive, while the natural landscape exudes serenity and harmony. Regarding gastronomy, the village offers a variety of choices. Taverns in the village center serve delicious meat dishes and local flavors, while the village's coffee shops also offer the opportunity to taste local tsipouro and wine, interact with the locals, and enjoy their hospitality. Just 4 kilometers away from Panagia, you will find Golden Beach at Skala Panagia, one of the most impressive beaches on the island. This beach, which once served as the village's port, is now a resort center with a multitude of hotels and a municipal camping area. This place is great for visitors. Its golden beach sparkles when the sun is at its highest, and the bright blue beach waters are crystal clear. It's the perfect spot to relax and have fun. Religious tourism also thrives in Panagia, as there are several churches worth visiting since they form the village's religious and cultural heritage. Elements of the village's history, tradition, and the lifestyle of its inhabitants are evident in its architecture and decor. The village's main church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and is characterized by its grandeur and excellent architecture. The impressive wood-carved iconostasis of exquisite Volos craftsmanship is simply iconic. Apart from the main church, there are 11 other churches from the 19th century, including the churches of Saint Athanasios, Saint Charalambos, the Theologian, Saint George, Saints Constantine and Helen, Saint John, and Saint Panteleimon. All these churches are characterized by their traditional architecture and simple lines. The village of Panagia on Thassos Island is renowned for its events and festivities. The festival on August 15th is particularly noteworthy when the village celebrates alongside the Virgin Mary. Among the traditions of this day is the "kourbani", a traditional dish of meat and wheat, shared after the religious ceremony. Also, on Clean Monday, the village takes on a symbolic form with a rich carnival celebration that includes a float parade, carnival costumes, and a satirical representation of current events and the entire Greek political scene. Finally, on the eve of November 1st, All Saints' Day, the village again prepares "kourbani" and celebrates both known and unknown Saints. Panagia is beautiful throughout the year, but it truly shines in summer, as it harmoniously combines the beautiful sea with the greenery of the mountains. Potamia is a village on Thassos, located on the hills of the Mountain Ipsario, just 10 kilometers away from Limenas Thassos. It’s near the eastern coasts of the island and very close to some of the most popular beaches, such as Golden Beach (4 kilometers away), Vathi Beach (10 kilometers away), and Makriammos Beach (11 kilometers away). Those arriving on the island from Kavala and disembarking at Skala Prinos will need to travel 24 kilometers to the east to find the village. To get to Potamia, one must choose between the three transportation options available on the island: renting a vehicle, taking a taxi, or using the KTEL buses. Those who opt for the bus should check the schedule as soon as they arrive (and for the entirety of their stay), as national, religious, or local holidays might affect the timetable. However, from Limenas, there are several bus routes throughout the day, from 7:30 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon. The name Potamia is attributed to the river that flows through the village and the small streams formed around it due to the significant amount of rainfall it receives throughout the year (Potamia in Greek means river). Although it’s a mountain village, Potamia has 1,200 permanent residents and is worth visiting year-round. It’s an ideal destination for those who love hiking, carnivals, and winter excursions. Beyond its beautiful architecture with its lovely stone houses, in Potamia, you can also admire the works of the renowned sculptor Polygnotos Vagis at the museum bearing his name, housed in the old stone school building. Polygnotos Vagis achieved widespread recognition in the United States, and many of his works are now displayed in his beloved hometown, Potamia Thassos. Another beautiful point of interest you don’t want to miss is the church of Saint Dimitrios, built in 1845. Potamia is a vibrant village that doesn’t fall short when compared to Thassos' coastal areas or its namesake, Skala Potamia, located just 3 kilometers away. There, you’ll find the beach with the same name, known for its shallow turquoise waters attracting numerous visitors yearly. Potamia offers taverns, cafes, businesses selling local products, and various accommodation options, making it a delightful alternative for summer vacations. Additionally, the village is widely prevalent among hiking enthusiasts, as it offers various trails suitable for both beginners and very experienced hikers. A popular path begins in Potamia and ends at the summit of Prophet Elias. Another more challenging and higher-altitude trail starts in Potamia and reaches the summit of Ipsario, where you’ll find the refuge belonging to the Hiking Association of Thassos, approachable by car. Of course, there are other shorter trails, like the one leading to the village of Panagia, which only takes about 50 minutes. In Potamia, the carnival tradition is highly cherished. Preparations for the carnival parade begin several months before the festivities, which escalate on the last Sunday before Clean Monday and the beginning of the Lenten season. The locals are known for their sarcastic humor, evident in their daily conversations and the costumes they choose for the carnival. These outfits typically offer snarky commentary on the local and national political scene. The Potamia Carnival Association organizes the parade passionately and promotes the event with videos and posters. During the celebration, the streets are filled with free red wine for all participants and spectators. It’s certainly an event worth experiencing if you’re in Thassos. The village fair (panigiri) in Potamia is also a traditional event of great significance and takes place on the first Friday after Easter in honor of Zoodochos Pigi. Another local custom worth witnessing up close is the revival of the “Anavrochiari,” organized annually on July 31st by the Cultural Association Polygnotos Vagis. An association member or a village resident covers themselves from head to toe in leaves and roams the village streets. People drench the leaf-covered person with water from their balconies to ward off the damaging summer droughts that can harm the crops. Visiting the village of Potamia in Thassos, you will experience unique cultural events and deeply rooted customs. You’ll have the chance to taste local wine and tsipouro, Thassian recipes with meat and fresh ingredients, and walk amidst the island’s unique natural beauty. The cobblestone road winding through the village serves as a picturesque link between its two ends. To get to Theologos, daily bus services run from both Limenas and Limenaria. Alternatively, for a more convenient journey, you can choose to take a taxi or rent a car. The village of Theologos is located in the southeastern part of Thassos, at an altitude of 240 meters, and is a designated traditional settlement that preserves its historical identity. It's 50 kilometers away from Limenas of Thassos and just 10 km from Potos. The village has significant historical importance, with roots dating back to the 8th century BC. It seems that the first residents in the area were Paros colonists, while the earliest recorded mentions of the settlement trace back to the 13th century. During the piracy era, Theologos flourished and became an administrative center. In 1287, Byzantine Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos mentioned that there was a “metochi” (a kind of estate) in the area dedicated to John the Evangelist. During the Ottoman rule, the Turks settled in the village, developing it further. In 1813, the area was handed over to Mehmet Ali Pasha of Egypt, granting the village significant autonomy. Hatjiyorgis, the village's chieftain, played a pioneering role in the revolutionary movement against the Turks. The liberation of the area finally occurred in 1912. According to the 2011 census, the village had 636 permanent residents. Today, however, the number seems to be more than 800. In the summer, locals earn their living from tourism, while in winter, they mainly engage in agriculture and livestock farming. At the Folklore Museum in Theologos, you can get a taste of the village's past. In the stone mansion of the chieftain Chatjigiorgis, which houses the museum, you'll experience some of the glorious times of Theologos. Churches, such as Agia Paraskevi and Agios Dimitrios, are monuments of religious art for the entire island of Thassos. Together with the church in the village of Panagia, they are the top religious tourism destinations in Thassos. It goes up 900 meters on rocky ground, taking you through the beautiful Arkeuthos forest and past the old Itamos plane trees. The trail to Potamia and the circular route Potos - Theologos - Potos are considerably easier paths, suitable for family walks in nature, while the route to the Monastery of Archangelos is the classic choice for people devoted to religious tourism. In all these routes, you'll have the chance to enjoy breathtaking views, connect with the nature of Thassos, and experience the unique scents of the pine forest. All the trails are marked by local authorities and well-maintained, ensuring you can comfortably go hiking or participate in other outdoor activities. In the village, tradition and culture are alive and well, expressed through customary events and local gastronomy. Every summer, the village comes alive with the reenactment of the traditional Thassos wedding, offering scenery and tastes from the good old days. However, what stands out in Theologos is its exquisite cuisine. Meat dishes occupy a prominent spot at the traditional table, with the spit-roasted goat being the most popular choice. Near the central square, taverns offer a rich variety of traditional products, where the aroma of Thassos's famous honey and spoon sweets will delight your palate. The culinary treasures of the village, combined with the hospitality of the locals, make visiting Theologos an unforgettable gastronomic experience for everyone. Since 1979, Theologos has been recognized as the cultural capital of Thassos. From that moment on, standards were set to preserve the distinctive architecture of the buildings. The village is known as a protected traditional spot, filled with examples of old-style buildings. In this charming place, you can stroll down stone-paved streets, see classic Makedonian homes, and feel like you've stepped back in time. The stone-roofed houses give the village an old-time, grand look. The Church of Agios Dimitrios in Theologos of Thassos, constructed in 1803, serves as the village's main church. This temple holds a piece of the area's history.  During the Ottoman period, it served as both a religious and legal hub. It's also known for the "bakires," a currency used during that era to serve the residents' transactional needs. A striking feature of the church is its wooden iconostasis, crafted by the monk Ignatius Philotheitis between 1807-1815. It's a masterpiece, often considered by many to be the most beautiful iconostasis of Eastern Makedonia. Within the church, there are also valuable frescoes, artifacts, and icons of the Virgin Mary, which were transferred from the Church of Panagouda. Maries is a mountainous village situated almost in the center of Thassos, slightly to the west. It is in a stunningly beautiful location, 40 kilometers from Limenas Thassos and 27 kilometers from Skala Prinou. Maries stands at an altitude of 200 meters, which is also the number of permanent residents living there today.  To reach the village, you'll need a vehicle, whether your own or a rental, or you can take a taxi. However, there are also bus services, but it's better to check the schedule upon arriving on the island, as they don't run frequently and typically operate only in the morning and early afternoon hours. The village's name often piques visitors' curiosity, who frequently ask about its origins. According to locals, there are three possible explanations: The first suggests that the village had many women named Maria, while the second that two women named Maria were the only survivors of a pirate raid. The third theory is related to a variation of the word "mouries," referring to a type of tree abundant in the area. In this village, it feels as though time has stood still. Its location, tucked deep within the island's interior, has shielded it from tourist development, allowing it to retain its traditional characteristics. Of course, you still have plenty of reasons to visit.  When arriving in Maries, one can admire the unique architecture of Thassos's mountain villages and taste authentic traditional Thassian cuisine, such as the roasted goat dish served in local taverns. If you come on August 15th, you'll witness the celebration of the Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos. There is a church that was built in 1813 and houses a miraculous hagiography of the Virgin Mary. The monastery is located between Maries and Skala Maries. Additionally, another point of interest for visitors interested in religious tourism is the village's church dedicated to the Synaxis of the Archangels, built in 1800. Every September, a bean soup festival featuring local wine, music, and dance takes place in the church's courtyard. The beautiful Orthodox Christian architecture and the unique atmosphere accompanying them make the churches of Thassos a destination appreciated by all kinds of visitors, whether they've come for religious or general tourism. The village's natural beauty is monumental, and, like Potamia, it offers hiking trails for nature lovers. Near Maries lies the island's only lake, which, although artificial, is surrounded by rich vegetation and is worth visiting. Furthermore, the area has three waterfalls, with one being rather hard to access. There's also a specially designed recreation area with benches to relax and enjoy a picnic. However, swimming, fishing, and lighting fires are prohibited, as the site is densely forested with pine trees. Near Maries, you'll find Skala Maries Beach, Atspas Beach, and Platana Beach, which you can easily visit. Most of the island's visitors prefer to stay in the coastal villages and take trips to the mountainous areas of Thassos, as there are more options for hotels and rooms to let. In the past, there were few to no alternative accommodation solutions in most mountain villages, but now infrastructures are being developed to cater to visitors who prefer to stay in the mountains and visit the beach rather than the other way around.

Backed by green mountains and overlooking the coastline, Kallirachi’s unique positioning combines the best for both nature admirers and sea lovers. From its view, you can even see the city of Kavala on the mainland. The people of Kallirachi, with their warmth synonymous with Greek hospitality, proudly keep their ancestral traditions, making any visit to their village a journey in time. Some visitors say the clock “stopped” for Kallirachi a century ago, preserving its ageless beauty. Kallirachi is located 24 kilometers west of Limenas, 10 kilometers south of Skala Prinos, and 2.5 kilometers away from Skala Kallirachis, a small port with a beautiful beach. It is a big village with more than 1000 permanent residents, according to the latest data. To reach Kallirachi in Thassos, you have three options: The first is to rent a car from a port like Limenas or Skala Prinos, depending on which ferryboat you take to reach the island. The second option is to use a taxi, but this can become costly if you intend to explore a lot. Your third option, a more budget-friendly and eco-conscious alternative, is traveling by bus (KTEL). To get to Kallirachi, the bus route from Limenas begins around 2:30 p.m., and for your return there, you should be at the bus stop around 6:30 in the morning. It’s crucial to stay informed about the bus schedules once you’re in Thassos, as national or local holidays might affect the timetable. Kallirachi carries a history that dates back centuries. The residents of Kakirachi built Kallirachi in 1750 after the first one was destroyed by pirates. The names of the settlements offer a fascinating insight into their history: “Kakirachi,” the name of the original location, translates to “bad ridge,” while “Kallirachi,” established after the destruction of Kakirachi, means “good/beautiful ridge.” The interesting facts about the names of the villages continue with the small, coastal location “Skala Kallirachis.” Many of you may have noticed that some mountainous villages share their name with a coastal counterpart, prefixed by “Skala.” These coastal villages were built by residents of the mountainous settlements who relocated to the seaside once the pirate threat was over. In Greek, “Skala” means ladder, symbolizing the connection between the coastal village and its original mountain counterpart. Kallirachi is characterized by its beautiful narrow streets, lined with traditionally built houses that seem to whisper stories from the past. As you stroll around, you can feel the sense of serenity and tranquility surrounding you, allowing you to escape the hustle of modern life for a few moments. At the heart of this village lies the central square, where a public faucet stands as a testament to the village’s rich communal spirit. Beyond the residential areas, the landscape around Kallirachi has stunning stone bridges made by skilled craftsmen from Epirus, each carrying its own history and legacy. One path from the village is a direct route to Kakirahi and Metamorfosi, allowing travelers to delve further into history. Metamorfosi or Hagia Metamorfosi is a small church on a mountaintop that offers a breathtaking view; definitely worth visiting. In Kallirachi, there is the church of Saint Demetrius, renowned for its excellent acoustics, and the Kallirachi Folklore Museum, one of the many folklore museums of Thassos. Housed in a restored building from 1740, it offers visitors a glimpse into Thassos’s traditional way of life. With its authentic furnishings, the museum captures the essence of the island’s historical domestic settings. Notably, once belonging to a sea captain, this residence adds a layer of maritime history to the venue, with the seafaring legacy being showcased in old photographs and paintings sourced from the Navy Museum in Kavala. During your visit to Kallirachi, you can enjoy meals and refreshments at its taverns, popular among locals for their quality food and drinks. You should taste the local wine, tsipouro, and ouzo and ask for local grilled souvlaki and traditional home-cooked dishes. Close to Kallirachi, two breathtaking beaches await your exploration: Skala Kallirachis and Klisma. Skala Kallirachis has a sandy beach with shallow waters, perfect for small children. Klisma, on the other hand, is a pebbled beach (often spared from large crowds) with a tavern that offers visitors the chance to enjoy fresh fish. If your travels bring you to Thassos, the emerald island of the North Aegean Sea, don’t miss your chance to explore it since it combines sea wonders and wild nature adventures. Get to Kallirachi by car or bus, and discover the stunning nature, the unique bridges, and the traditional Thassian architecture. Giola is a small lagoon in southern Thassos, standing as a unique gem not only of the island but also of the Aegean and the entirety of Greece. Such natural wonders are rare, which explains why visitors are so eager to dive into its crystal-clear waters. Hidden between towering rocks that rise 8 meters above the water, this natural pool has a depth of 3 meters, inviting sea lovers to dive into its refreshing waters. From Limenas Thassos, a drive to Giola is roughly an hour away (40.9 kilometers). If you’re starting from the port of Skala Prinos, you should expect a 45-minute journey (37 kilometers). Your first stop is Astris -which you can reach by car or the KTEL buses. But here’s a tip: prepare for some adventure when nearing Giola. Once in the Astris, find the parking spot, but keep those walking shoes handy. Expect a 10-15 minute walk that promises a breathtaking sight worth every step on a road that can be tricky. This natural landmark was gradually shaped over millennia as waves incessantly beat against it, eroding it bit by bit. However, according to mythology, Giola is also called “Aphrodite’s tear”. Legend has it that Zeus created the lagoon as a bathing spot for the goddess of love and beauty. Another story suggests that he made this pool that resembles an eye to secretly watch her swim. The dimensions of Giola are approximately 20 by 15 meters, and its waters shift in hue - sometimes azure, sometimes deep blue or turquoise, and some other times a rich green, depending on the sunlight’s angle and intensity. The pool’s water is warmer than the sea and refreshed by waves that crash onto its lowest edge towards the sea. Still, a discovery made a few years ago during a cleaning operation revealed that it also gets replenished from underground sources. During that cleaning, seaweed, sea urchins, and a natural slippery layer formed on the rocks were removed. While diving is a favorite activity for all visitors at this spot, it’s crucial to exercise caution. The 3-meter depth and the pool’s small length may not always be sufficient for long dives. Additionally, care should be taken when diving into the sea in front of Giola, as the waters there are notably deep and sometimes experience strong waves. Starting your trip to Giola, don’t forget to bring sunscreen, water, a towel, a hat, and sunglasses. The spot isn’t shielded from the sun, and naturally, no facilities provide water, snacks, or shade on the rock. So if you plan to stay for a while, bring all your essentials and keep them with you, as the distance from where you’ll park your vehicle is considerable. However, just a short walk away, there’s a tavern and a cafe where you can relax and enjoy a meal. Also, near the parking area, there’s the ecological park “Aphrodite’s Myth,” which is definitely worth visiting, especially to enjoy the shade of the pine trees and have a cold, refreshing coffee. For those of you who have already visited the location and have decided that the next time you come to the island, you’ll stay nearby, accommodation options are available for rent within a short distance. And don’t worry about your stay being monotonous, as the beaches of Kalami, Livadi, and Arsanas are close.

Paradise Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island for a very good reason: The dense forest that reaches the beach and the shallow emerald waters create a magical natural scene that you will never forget. This beach is located 24 kilometers southeast of Limenas and is close to Kinira Beach and Kinira village. You can also see the small island “Kiniriotiko” from both coasts, which is protected by Natura 2000. Paradise Beach is easily accessible by car and public transportation like buses (KTEL). Popular places like this have frequent bus routes passing by them due to increased demand from tourists and locals. Of course, you can rent a car or grab a taxi if that suits your needs better. There are several parking spots nearby, but it can still be very crowded during peak hours in the summer season. Getting there early in the morning is advised to find sunbeds near the sea and good parking spots.  The beach is well organized and has many sunbeds with umbrellas provided by the beach bars that operate in the area. Usually, the cost of the sunbeds includes a free drink such as coffee, soft drinks, or beer. Paradise Beach is perfect for families with kids for two main reasons: The waters are very shallow for a long distance, and there is plenty of space between the sunbeds and the sea to play with the fine sand. The only drawback is that sometimes it is windy and it may have waves. In Paradise Beach, you don’t have to worry about amenities because toilets and showers are provided by the businesses that operate on the beach. You will also find restaurants and taverns to enjoy a meal while spending your day enjoying the sea and the sun. Nudist Section Paradise Beach was a famous nudist beach in the past decades because it is secluded by the thick trees of the forest. Although this is not the case anymore, there is a nudist section on the rocky part of the beach, which is not visible from the main beach and offers privacy to those who enjoy swimming and sunbathing in more natural ways.

Golden Beach owes its fame to its length, almost 3 kilometers long, to its shallow turquoise waters, and to its pure and thin golden sand. Located on the eastern shores of the island, just an 18-minute drive from Limenas Thassos. Υou can reach it easily by car or taxi, while the routes of public transportation (KTEL buses) are also convenient and frequent due to the popularity of this beach. Behind this long sandy beach stands the highest peak of mountain Ipsarion. The view from that beach is stunning, as the green mountains almost reach the seashore. Alongside the beach, there are two small villages, Skala Potamia and Skala Panagia, where you can enjoy a lovely traditional meal, fresh fish, and local seafood.
