The Monastery of Archangel Michael is located in a stunning location near Aliki, Livadi Beach, and Arsanas Beach, about 36 kilometers south of Limenas Thassos. Dating back to the 18th century, it proudly claims the title of the most significant Monastery on the island, which serves as a dependency (metochi) of the Philotheos Monastery on the holy Mount Athos.
Thassos was historically enriched by the strong connection with Mount Athos monasteries through their property ownership on the island. Among its treasured collection of religious artifacts, the Monastery of Archangel Michael is famous for possessing a fragment of the Holy Nail from the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This sacred relic is central to the Monastery's annual religious celebrations on the first Tuesday after Easter, beginning from Theologos, drawing both the pilgrims and the curious to witness the traditional circumambulation.
The architectural beauty of the Monastery of Archangel Michael is accompanied by its breathtaking location on the edge of a cliff, providing a stunning view of the Aegean Sea. The Monastery, a sanctuary for nuns, offers a warm welcome to visitors. However, it respectfully requests compliance with a modest dress code for men and women. If you are not suitably dressed, you can still enter the establishments by wearing additional clothes on top of your clothes provided at the entrance.
The long story of the Monastery unfolds through a rich collection of historical documents, including the first reference to its existence dating back to 1287. A significant renovation in 1835, as you will see on an inscription while entering, further established the Monastery's legacy.
Today, the Monastery is a spiritual haven, and Christians from nearby Orthodox countries visit the island just to visit it. Travelers are encouraged to come here, where the serene atmosphere and the island's rich history offer a unique retreat amidst the natural beauty of Thassos. You can also visit the cave with the holy water, but you must be in good physical condition and wear comfortable shoes and clothes. While at the Monastery, seek guidance for the location and prefer not to go alone because some spots are tricky, and you might need help.
