The Thassos Jeep Safari by Potos Tours is one of those experiences that covers everything Thassos has to offer in a single full-day adventure: ancient villages, mountain peaks, waterfalls, monasteries, and panoramic views that stretch all the way to Mount Athos. No experience needed, just a valid driver's licence and a sense of adventure.
You'll take the wheel of a convertible Suzuki Jimny or a Jeep Renegade, joining a convoy of fellow explorers with a trained guide leading the way. The tour runs from 09:00 to approximately 17:00, giving you a full day to take it all in.
The route begins at Kastro, considered the oldest village on Thassos. Its stone-built houses and the ruins of a castle dating to 1403 set the tone for the day. The village church of St. Athanasius, built in 1804 in just 40 days, is a highlight in itself. From there, the convoy heads to the Monastery Panagouda, where you can visit an old wooden church and drink from a healing spring, before continuing to the waterfalls and artificial lake at Maries, surrounded by plane trees and crystal-clear water. Here you'll get the chance to taste traditional Thassian sweets and the island's famous pine honey.
The trail then climbs to the Shelter viewpoint at 910 metres, offering sweeping views of Golden Beach, and a stop at a mountain spring for fresh, cold water. The final destination is the summit of Mount Ipsarion at 1,206 metres, the island's highest peak, where on a clear day the views reach Kavala, Mount Athos, and the islands of Lemnos and Samothrace. The views from up here are worth the entire climb.
Each car carries a maximum of 3 participants, keeping the experience personal. Hotel pick-up and drop-off is included at selected hotels across the island, and child seats are available on request. The tour is not recommended for travellers with back problems, pregnant travellers, or those who are not comfortable with bumpy off-road terrain.
What to bring: comfortable closed shoes (no flip-flops), two small water bottles you can refill at the springs, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and some cash for honey or sweets along the way.
By the time you descend from Ipsarion, with pine-scented air still in your lungs and a camera full of mountain-top views, you'll understand why the interior of Thassos is as captivating as its coastline.
