A full-day walk through mountain villages, ancient caves, and pine forests, ending at one of the island's finest beaches.
The Hiking Tour Thassos by Visit North Greece is a guided walk that takes you deep into the living landscape of the island, from the stone-paved streets of Potamia all the way down to the crystal-clear waters of Golden Beach. No two parts of the route feel the same: forests, herb-lined paths, a village square buzzing with locals, an ancient cave, and finally, the sea.
The tour begins at the Platia (village square/fountain) in Potamia. From there, the trail heads uphill into the surrounding forests, passing herb-covered hillsides that are especially fragrant in spring. Along the way, you visit the small St. Nikolaos Church, one of the oldest on the island. Back in Potamia, a short village tour follows: a stop at a local potter's workshop, a walk along the watercourse, and time at the Platia to fill your water bottle at the fountain and watch village life over a Greek coffee. The highlight here is a visit to a traditional olive press, where a 4th-generation family produces one of the 10 best olive oils in the world.
After the village, the path descends toward Golden Beach. The route passes through the Dragon's Cave, where the first settlers of Thassos sheltered from pirates, a quiet and atmospheric stop that feels far removed from any tourist trail. Above the bay, the views down to the golden shoreline are some of the best on the island.
The tour concludes above the Golden Beach bay, where you can swim in the clear water or relax at one of the beach cafes. Total duration is 5 to 6 hours, with 4 to 5 hours of active hiking. A good level of fitness is required. The tour is not suitable for children under 5, people with mobility impairments, or those with a low fitness level.
This is Thassos at its most honest: forests that smell of pine and herbs, villages where the coffee is strong and the fountain is always running, and a beach that makes the climb worthwhile.
