Skala Sotiros is a coastal village located southwest of Limenas and south of Skala Prinou, and it has a population of 377, according to the most recent available data. It is the port of the mountain village Sotiras and its "extension" because it was established by its residents, who decided to settle on the island's shores.
To reach the village, you must drive 24 minutes from Limenas Thassos or just 8 minutes from Skala Prinou. It's a 4-minute drive from Skala Kallirachi and is built on the island's main road. This means it's well-served by the frequent bus routes between Limenas and Limenaria and vice versa. During the summer season, the buses typically run from around 6 in the morning until about 5 in the afternoon. For evening travels, the usual means of transportation for those without a car are taxis or rented vehicles.
Residents of the area primarily engage in fishing, so you'll see many colorful fishing boats and recreational boats at the beautiful small harbor. Those not involved in fishing tend to cultivate olive groves and produce oil products. Moreover, there are quite a few who are entirely dedicated to tourism.
Around the village's main road, by the shore, there are several taverns with great food that are worth visiting. Also, make sure to try the village's bread! The area now has many rental rooms, so you can stay in Skala Sotiros as an alternative option on Thassos. Skala Sotiros Beach is quiet and lovely, and some cafes and bars offer calm nightlife options.
One of the most significant times of the year in Skala Sotiros is the celebration of the village's church on August 6th. The temple is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Savior, from which the village gets its name. This church was built in 1890, but the site where it stands has a history spanning thousands of years. Its foundations rest upon Roman baths, and in its courtyard are traces of a prehistoric settlement dating back to the Bronze Age.
Even if you don't stay in Skala Sotiros, it's worth visiting the area and traveling up to the mountainous village of Sotira through a route of exceptional natural beauty. The mountain air is crystal clear and good for your health, and you should check out the stone-built spring constructed in 1888 and rest at the local tavern.
