Well-hidden in the mountain village of Panagia in Thassos, the Church of the Assumption of Mary is a majestic and sacred testament to the orthodox Christian faith and community spirit. Constructed in 1831 with contributions from the residents of Kastoria and the financial support from the monastery of Vatopedi in Mount Athos, this church holds a strong bond with the locals.
Crafted from stones taken from the ruins of ancient temples, this basilica, with its 18-meter-high tower, characteristic white and blue color, and magnificent dome, captivates visitors. Within its sacred walls, one can find the sacred painting of Panagia the Pantovlepusa (Omniscient Madonna) dating back to 1814, alongside historical artifacts, including the village's unique coins known as "bakires" and a crusade-era banner.
Each year, on August 15th, the church fills with people who celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Local women prepare the traditional meal "koulbani" (meat with wheat) in the courtyard, sharing it with worshippers in a gesture of communal harmony and devotion.
