Near the emblematic Acropolis of Thassos at Limenas, the Ancient Theater offers a captivating blend of nature and historical architecture on a natural amphitheatrical slope that gracefully overlooks the sea, the city, and the distant shores of the mainland. Discovered in 1921 by the French Archaeological School, the theater's ruins revealed its past as a venue for different kinds of spectacles.
Accessing this ancient marvel can be an adventure, with stone staircases and natural paths leading from the port through Evraiokastro to the theater. To safeguard against fire risks, a forest road was established, enhancing access and offering an alternative route for visitors.
The theater's rich history, dating back to the early Hellenistic period, is evidenced by its construction phases, from the Doric-style stage building facade dedicated to Dionysus to its transformation into an arena for gladiatorial contests and animal hunts. This historic site, with its asymmetrical entrances and inscriptions of reserved seating, stands as proof of the Thassian cultural legacy.
Note that the Ancient Theater of Thassos may be closed this summer due to maintenance. If you plan to explore the Archaeological Site of Limenas in search of the theater, we recommend asking a local before making your way up the hill. Of course, beyond the Ancient Theater, it is well worth visiting the area for its stunning views and other monuments, such as the Ancient Agora and the Ancient Odeon.
After your stroll through the archaeological sites, seek refreshment at the Archaeological Museum, take a quick dip at Limanaki beach, and relax at a taverna in the Ancient Harbor, next to the Kalogeriko building, as the sun sets and the lights of the island's capital romantically illuminate the evening.
