Historically, Thassos had two ancient harbors: One for trade and commerce and the other for military purposes. By visiting the Old Harbour (ancient military harbour) located in the historic center of Limenas, you step into the vibrant past of Thassos.
At the site of the Old Harbour, modern infrastructure now stands, yet its heritage remains evident. Visitors can see the remnants of the round towers of the ancient harbor along the new promenade, offering history enthusiasts glimpses of a glorious maritime past.
Part of the breakwater, extending into the sea, also remains, hinting at the harbor's once-strategic importance. This well-preserved site is a testament to the island's rich history and is more than worth exploring.
Numerous archaeological sites unfold as you wander around this area, including the Ancient Agora (which used to be within the ancient harbor's walls), where trade flourished in ancient Thassos. Today, the Old Harbour enchants with its beauty, the stunning Kalogeriko and spectacular sunsets, creating a breathtaking atmosphere that captures the essence of Greek charm.
Ancient commercial harbour
The commercial port right in front of the Evraiokastro was an open harbor safeguarded by a semicircular defensive tower. This commercial port ceased operation in the 7th century, but its relics still peek just a meter below the sea surface.
With its natural charm and historical significance, the Ancient Harbours area continues to be a magnet for visitors seeking a blend of unique scenery, traditional Greek ambiance, and a touch of tranquility in the atmosphere. The nearby taverns and bars add to your experience, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the beautiful island of Thassos.
