The Acropolis of Thassos is “sunbathing” under the Thassian sun on a scenic 137m hill peak, offering a fascinating view. It is the perfect place to explore the island’s history and ancient architecture. You will find it at the Archaeological Site of Limenas, the capital of the island and the main port that connects Thassos with Keramoti.
As you hike uphill from the Ancient Agora parallel to the fortification wall, the journey leads to the Acropolis, where you will find three distinct peaks. The first peak, where the Acropolis is located, was strategically used, serving as a prime observatory spot during ancient times. It bears the marks of various historical eras, including a section of marble wall dating back to the 5th century B.C. This site was transformed during the first Christian era, and basilicas were built with building materials from the ancient temples. You can also find the Genovese Castle of Gattilusi nearby.
Continuing the ascent, you will reach the second peak, where the ruins of the Temple of Athena can be found. This temple is a testament to the island’s ancient religious and cultural practices. Nearby, on the third peak, lies the intriguing cave of the Sanctuary of Pana, carved directly into the rock, featuring a raised design of the goat-footed god.
The southern peak of the Acropolis holds yet another historical marvel. A large stone with marks on it, and remnants of the wall and the Gate of Parmenion date back to around 510-490 BC.
As one descends from the Acropolis, the extensive remains of the Sanctuary of Hercules, unveiled through archaeological excavations, unfold before the eyes, offering a hard-to-forget view of Thassos’s ancient architectural and cultural landscape. This journey by the Acropolis is a walk through ancient ruins with a vivid narrative of a civilization that has profoundly influenced the island’s history.
Combine your exploration with a visit to Evraiokastro and a refreshing swim at Limanaki Beach. You can also visit Kalogeriko and the Archaeological Museum of Thassos and spend a lovely evening at Limenas, enjoying traditional food and cocktails.
