Destinations in Thassos

The island of Thassos has everything to suit your taste – from idyllic turquoise water sports to mountainous villages, hiking trails, and traditional Thracian-Macedonian architecture.

Thassos has two main ports, with the most popular route being from Keramoti to Limenas, the island’s capital. It’s just a quick 40-minute journey!

Limenas is a charming seaside town in North Thassos where you’ll find taverns and picturesque alleys, vibrant nightlife, modern amenities, and shopping. In Limenas, you’ll also discover several archaeological sites, the Thassos Archaeological Museum, and the absolutely stunning Makryammos beach – only two kilometers away.

Your second option to reach the emerald gem of the Thracian Sea is to hop on a boat from Kavala to Skala Prinou. This journey is a tad longer, taking roughly an hour and fifteen minutes, but it’s entirely worth it! The port offers many activity options, with taverns, cafés, and rooms to let. Just 800 meters away, you can immerse yourself in the petite lush forest of Prinos (Dasilio Prinos), located right on the beach and including the Municipal Camping of Prinos.

Once you’ve arrived and settled in, get ready for exploration! Thassos is brimming with experiences waiting to be lived and sights to be admired. Starting with the coastal destinations, visit Limenaria, the second-largest village on Thassos, perched on a hill. The harbor is modern and can accommodate private boats, while the village is abundant with taverns and restaurants for the food lovers among you.

Right next “door,” you’ll find the village of Kalivia; however, you might have difficulty distinguishing it from Limenaria, as the development of both villages makes them seem like one!

If you seek nightlife on vacation, you must visit or stay in Potos. This village is a popular destination for young adults but is also ideal for families because of its gorgeous sandy beaches that are perfect for children.

On the other hand, if tranquility, relaxation, fresh fish, and emerald waters with sand and pebbles define your perfect summer vacation, then you must visit Kinira, a seaside village with Thassos’s most famous beach, Paradise. Opposite the village is Kinira Island, which is private and hosts a little house.

To blend a journey through time with two of Thassos’s most beautiful beaches, stop at Aliki peninsula. This location consists of two bays and Aliki’s Archaeological Site, which showcases an ancient settlement and a semi-submerged quarry that operated from the 6th century BC to the 6th century AD. Once you’ve completed your dives into the island’s history and Aliki’s crystal-clear waters, you can rest in a charming tavern with a delicious meal.

For swimming, do visit Pefkari beach, where you can also enjoy water sports, Tripiti for diving, Skala Marion with its little harbor and taverns serving traditional greek seafood “meze”, Thimonia beach if you enjoy fishing, Astris Bay for deep waters (and the famous natural pool “Giola“), and of course, the island’s largest beach, Golden Beach, with its characteristic shallow waters.

However, the magic of Thassos is not limited to turquoise waters and beachside archaeological landmarks; it soars up to 1,208 meters at the island’s highest peak, Ypsarion. Scattered around, Thassos’ mountainous villages lie well-hidden within verdant forests, their alleyways and cobblestone paths eagerly awaiting your discovery.

One of the most extraordinary villages is Theologos, situated at an elevation of 220 meters, rich in history and tradition. Here, you’ll find the Theologos Folklore Museum, and you can experience the revival of the traditional Thassian wedding every summer (the date of this custom varies).

To marvel at the traditional architecture of Thassos, visit Kazaviti (two mountain villages just over half a mile apart, also known as Mikros and Megalos Prinos). The beauty of these villages is beyond description, and you must try the excellent local wine and meat.

Climbing even higher, at 500 meters, we find the island’s oldest village, Kastro. This village is a historical monument where you can see the remnants of the Genovese wall built in 1403 AD, stones from which were later used in 1804 to construct the Church of Saint Athanasios.

Next, continue your journey to Kallirachi, built-in 1750 by inhabitants of the pirate-ravaged Kakirachi, and admire the view from the chapel at the Agia Metamorfosi. Move on to Maries, a village that keeps its traditions alive and is renowned for its excellent meats in local taverns. Don’t miss visiting Prinos, a beautiful village graced with old olive groves.

Lastly, visit Panagia, the village known for its unique traditional architecture, fountains, plane trees, and channels with flowing water. Wrap up your tour with Potamia, the village with stone houses, Sotiras, nestled at 300 meters, Rachoni, and “Vouzi,” the endearing nickname for the village Agios Georgios.

Enjoy every moment of your exploration, create memories, and take the most incredible photos to take back home with you!!
