Sotiras

Sotiras is located on an idyllic spot, 300 meters above sea level, 20 kilometers west of Limenas Thassos, and 3 kilometers from the nearest beach, Skala Sotiros (just 5 kilometers south of Skala Prinos). You will need a car or a taxi to get there, or you can ask about nearby bus stops. While some bus routes pass through neighboring villages like Prinos, Kazaviti, and Skala Kallirachi and might have stops within Sotiras village, it’s important to note that not all buses do so.

The mountainous village of Sotiras, while lesser-known than its coastal counterpart, Skala Sotiros, offers a unique charm suitable to visitors looking for a more tranquil and undisturbed experience. Though it may not feature the activity of coastal villages, Sotiras provides a range of accommodation options that promise serenity and seclusion.

Armored with a rich past, this village was once a settlement of miners and inhabitants from what is now known as Kallirachi. While time has taken its toll on Sotiras, leading to most of the houses becoming vacant, a small group of locals still proudly call this village home.

Remarkably, Sotiras has sacred ties with Mount Athos. A testament to this bond is the majestic Church of the Savior, built in 1980, with its beautifully crafted altar, a masterpiece created by the gifted monks of Mount Athos. This church is a must-visit for those who are in Thassos for religious tourism and for those who appreciate rare architectural sites. Don’t miss the feast (panigiri) every 6th of August, dedicated to celebrating the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ.
