Just 14 kilometers west of Limenas Thassos is the second port of Thassos, Skala Prinos. Skala means ladder, and it is used to describe the connection between inhabitants from the mountainous village Prinos and those who left to make a coastal settlement after the threat of piracy was finally over. In the port of Skala Prinos, the ships arrive from Kavala. If you travel to Kavala’s airport (KVA) and then take the ship to Thassos, you will disembark here.
To arrive at Skala Prinos is easy because public transportation has regular bus routes that go to and from the port to the rest of the island. Most of the buses operate between 6.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. You can also take a taxi or rent a car if you don’t own one and need more flexibility in exploring the island.
Skala Prinos is also the location of the military airport of Thassos, which was used by the Allies from 1916 to 1919 during the First World War. In the harbor, right next to the docks, is a war memorial dedicated to those who fought and lost their lives at war. Nowadays, Skala Prinos has substantial tourist growth, with many hotels, rooms to let, and restaurants operating fully during the summer season.
As you walk by the beach to the left (facing the sea) from the port, you will find an operational traditional shipyard with small and big ships and boats waiting their turn to be repaired and explore the waters again. Keep walking a few more meters in the same direction, and you will find Dasilio, which in Greek means a small forest. Its trees are reaching the sea, providing shelter from the sun to those enjoying their days on the beach. Inside this beautiful little forest is the organized and fully operational municipality camping, where you can stay if you book your spot on time!
If you are staying in Skala Prinos, you will probably have the chance to participate in music events during the summer, enjoy quality food at the local restaurants, and explore the rest of the island by frequent public transportation. The beaches in the area are stunning, with white sand and shallow waters, making them a perfect option for families with little children. One of these beaches is the Skala Prinos Beach.
If you want to learn more about local products while you stay in Skala Prinos, you should visit the Olive and Oil Museum, which is located within a 20-minute walking distance from the port. Every August, you can enjoy the Honey Festival held by the Thassian Honey Association, located at Prinos and Skala Prinos.
The accommodation options in Skala Prinos are plenty, and the settlement is close to the local health center in Prinos. Many businesses are located in this area, and you can even rent a boat in the nearby village of Skala Sotiros for an extra dose of adventure.
If you want to stay close to amenities, such as beach bars, supermarkets, and touristic businesses, and at the same time have many options to explore Thassos, Skala Prinos is the perfect choice for you.
