Skala Marion is an unusual fishing village, as it combines three beautiful bays, unique urban planning, and traditional Northern Greek architecture, with evident influences from Mount Athos. The village is located on the island's southwest coast, close to Limenaria and the Tripiti Beach, and it's only 16 kilometers away from the port of Skala Prinou. The local population amounts to 400 residents, according to the most recent data.
Reaching Skala Marion from Limenas Thassos takes a 40-minute drive, as the distance is 31.5 kilometers. From Skala Prinou, you can drive south for 20 minutes to reach the village. The KTEL buses run frequent routes from and to the two main ports, as the village is on the way to Limenaria, the second-largest town of Thassos.
What's admirable about the village is its urban planning. The houses are built right next to each other, amphitheatrically overlooking Skala Marion's beach, and all face the sea. The fact that they are constructed almost adjacent to one another is due to pirate raids. Connected houses provided better protection for the residents and their possessions.
The unique architecture is the second thing one notices upon arriving in Skala Marion. In old buildings, details on the ceilings and ornaments on the balconies are preserved to this day, indicative of wealth and prosperity. Until 1926, the area's connection to Mount Athos was very close, and three dependencies (metochia) operated: the metochi of the Monastery of Karakallou, that of the Monastery of Stavronikita, and the metochi of the Monastery of Xeropotamou.
Like most fishing villages in Thassos, Skala Marion is known for its food. Small taverns with seating by the harbor offer well-cooked seafood, fresh fish of the day, and traditional Thassian recipes. They serve appetizers for local ouzo, wine, and tsipouro, immersing you in an authentic Greek summer while overlooking the sea.
Skala Marion Beach is in front of the village, a quiet, organized beach with beautifully shallow waters. It's an ideal spot to enjoy the sea with your children, just a stone's throw from the village center. To the left, as you look out to the sea, is the narrow Atspas Bay, with its turquoise - really shallow - waters and white sand. The bay is surrounded by trees and hosts a beach bar with loungers.
To the right of Skala Marion's beach, you'll find the popular Platanes Beach, an open bay with fine sand. Platanes is vast, and only parts of it are organized, leaving space for those who prefer the tranquility and autonomy of an unorganized beach. With three beautiful bays to choose from – featuring sandy beaches and shallow waters within close proximity – the area is ideal for families.
There are several accommodation options in Skala Marion, and you will definitely find the one that suits your needs. Nearby are Limenaria, as previously mentioned, Pefkari Beach, and Potos if you're looking for nightlife.
