Agios Georgios, which means Saint George, is one of the small mountain villages of the island. Located on the north side of Thassos, it is just 1 kilometer from the stunning village Rachoni and 15 kilometers from Limenas Thassos. Those arriving with ferries from Kavala will find Agios Georgios 7 kilometers east of Skala Prinos, their docking port. To get to this village, you can rent a car, take a taxi or take a bus route to Rachoni, like the one leaving Limenas at 2.50 p.m.
Inhabitants from Agios Georgios and Rachoni used to live in higher altitudes than now to protect themselves from the raiding pirates. When piracy was no longer a threat, they retreated to the villages as we know them today. What’s left of those old, higher settlements is a small chapel of Saint George, which you can visit following the hiking path from Agios Georgios.
According to local legends, the old settlement of Agios Georgios was the early childhood home of Muhammad Ali Pasha, one of the most influential rulers of Egypt who grew up in Kavala.
Between Agios Georgios and Rachoni, there is a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and celebrated on the 15th of August. Those who find themselves in Thassos for religious tourism will highly appreciate a tour of all the churches in the mountainous villages of Thassos. Also, taking a tour like that allows you to admire beautiful natural landscapes and breathtaking views.
During the summer, there is a fully functional tavern that you can visit, rest and eat something. Agios Georgios has only a few permanent residents and a very serene atmosphere. Most visitors prefer accommodation options at the nearby coastal villages, like Skala Rachoni, and explore the mountains by car during their stay.
Whether you’re retracing historical footprints, seeking spiritual rejuvenation, or simply admiring the unique beauty of Thassian nature, Agios Georgios offers a genuinely worthy experience.
